This event was originally scheduled to be UFC 196 on pay-per-view, headlined by UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabricio Werdum defending against Cain Velasquez. On January 24, Velasquez was forced out of the bout due to injury and was replaced by Stipe Miocic.
The following day, Werdum pulled out of the bout due to injuries of his own and being uncomfortable with the change in opponent. With no viable main event replacement, the UFC cancelled the pay-per-view broadcast and moved the event to FOX Sports 1, renaming it from UFC 196 to UFC Fight Night 82. Subsequently, UFC 197 in March was renamed UFC 196, and another pay-per-view event will be added in the spring, likely on Memorial Day Weekend, in order to keep UFC 200 in July for International Fight Week.
The original co-main event of the event, a welterweight bout between Johny Hendricks and Stephen Thompson, was moved to the main event and switched from three rounds to five rounds.
