CC's Binge Reviews: Luke Cage Season 2
I finished watching season 2 of the Netflix hit show Luke Cage last week and I could not be more pleased with how the second season played out. I liked season one, but I thought the writers made some mistakes that really hurt the flow of the inaugural season, which stopped it from being great. But this year, the story played out over the course of thirteen episodes, and it was sensationally done.
Unlike last year where the villians changed and things were a bit jumbled in spots, this season was clear. This was Harlem against Mariah, with Luke Cage caught in the middle. And in the end, we were left wondering if the power and popularity has gone to Luke's head and if he now is the new bully in Harlem, instead of the hero. He owns Harlem's Paradise, he made a deal with the drug dealers that he would leave them alone as long as they stay out of Harlem, and he's ruling by fear. It was a hell of cliff hanger for next season.
I must say, this season's action was tremendous. They did an excellent job presenting violence that was ruthless and sensical. My favorite scene was when Mariah and Shades shoot up the restaurant, bring in Anansi to make him see they killed his family, poors rum on him, and lights him on fire. Then, because he's taking to long to die, Mariah puts a bullet in his head. That was the type of season this was, tremendous!!! Mariah was the best villain I have seen in quite sometimes, because she was a realistic villain. When she was in prison and the shanked the chick who was coming to kill her, after she offered them money to be her protection, I popped like popcorn!! Ruthless.
I loved the pop culture references this season, with Luke getting a Nike sponsorship deal and having his own App. They were great touches, that showed how much of well known superhero he has become in the community.
I will have more on the details of the season, when I'm joined by a few members of the Crew to discuss the series in video form, because there is aloy to unpack about this season.
