Run It Back DVR Review: Fall Season # 1
Monday 9/19/16 - Sunday 9/25/16
This past Summer I introduced a new feature here at Causioncreations, where I reviewed every show that I recorded on my DVR each week. This has become one of the most popular features on the site, so I have decided to keep it going this Fall. With so many great shows airing each day, its impossible to watch everything live, or on a daily basis. So this is the best way for me to give my quick thoughts on what's happening on all the shows I watch.
So each and every week here at Causioncreations, I will "Run back" over my DVR and give my quick thoughts on all the shows. I start on Monday and run until Sunday. Some weeks I may skip a show, so the next week I will cover any episode I may have missed the previous week.
So let's get to it.

Monday
Kevin Can Wait on CBS
Its great to see my man Kevin James back on TV and with a new sit com that really brings out his strength. The premiere episode delivered a preview of what I hope we can expect every week. The formula is Kevin does something dumb, has to work his way out of it and in the end we get a lot of laughs along the way. Can't lose!!! |
Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood
I must be honest, I watched season 1 of this show then quit. It wasn't until I saw on IG that Ms. Nikki was in a relationship with Rosa Acosta, that I decided I had to check this out. MY MY MY. And then when I saw she was two timer her with that loser ex boyfriend of Nikki Minaj Safari, I was intrigued and I have to see how this plays out. Lol. |
The Good Place
I love Kristin Bell, and was so sad when House of Cards was canceled. So when I saw that she was starring in her own show, of course I had to watch it. And I'm glad I did. The show will move to Thursday later this week, which saddens me because that night is so jammed packed already. I will say, this needs to be on your DVR at least. |
Tuesday
Brooklyn Nine Nine on FOX
We open the season learning that Jake and Holt are living in witness protection in Florida hiding out from the Butcher. I enjoyed this episode, as I do enjoy the chemistry between these two, but I must admit I did miss Boil, Terry, Hitchcock, Sculley and the rest of the crew. The next few weeks will also take place in Florida so I hope some kind of way a few of the guys make the trip down because that would really make this story line better. |
This Is Us on NBC
I really enjoyed the premier of this new series which follows the lives of various people who were all born on the same day. You have a husband who's wife goes into labor with her three babies, one of which doesn't survive; twins, a brother who's searching for a better career path and sister who struggles with weight gain; and then a husband who finds the father that gave him up as a baby and tries to create a connection with him, despite how hurt he still is. |
Atlanta on FX
So far Atlanta has been a great show, one of the best new shows of the year. This past episode was hilarious. Paper Boi's Twitter beef with Zan was so damn funny. Best part was the little fat dude in the backseat going off!!! Yo he was hilarious!!! I love the facial expressions and acting of everyone. The overall take away message of the show was probably the best so far, and it was that poor people don't have time for investments. So true. |
Halt and Catch Fire on AMC
All season the relationship tension between Cameron and Donna has been building and it finally came to a head this week. Honestly, Cameron is a loose cannon and she needs Donna to reel her in. Cameron acts like this is her business and she can call all the shots. But without Donna they would have been dead in the water. I think they will get on the same page but it may be due to Gordon ultimately. |
Wednesday
Survivor on CBS
This season the Survivor angle is Millennials vs Generation X. Honestly, I had no clue what categorized you as either, so that was a lesson learned all in its itself. On episode one, the weather was too rough and for the first time ever, the beaches had to be evacuated. If that is any sign of what is to come, this season going be crazy!!! |
Lethal Weapon on FOX
When I think of Riggs and Murtaugh, I really don't think of these two. But I must say, this was surprisingly very entertaining. Damon Wayons is the perfect person to make this show not feel like just another cop show, which is desperately needed on TV right now. I like the backstory of both cops and its a good play evolution on the film. |
Empire on FOX
Empire returned with a much more focused episode that was pretty good. I have been wavering on whether I was going to continue following this show every week, as I felt the show fell off a cliff in season 2 with its rushing of story lines and cramming too much stuff into a season. The premiere was cool, but I have no clue why Lucious and Annika are back together. Its dumb. |
Blackish on ABC
I wasn't a huge fan of this season return episode as I felt it was bit too goofy and outlandish for my taste. this show is at its best when they tackle real life scenarios from the black perspective and lace the episode with strong comedic moments. This didn't click for me. But the bright spot that made the whole episode worthwhile was the return of Charlie, who was simply hilarious as always!!! |
Speechless on ABC
OK this is funny as shit. Yo, it had me from the opening scene, and just got better!!! Yo its Shameless on regular TV. They wreckless man and have no limits!!! My man in the wheel chair is hilarious and I'm sure this is the first show I can remember where the main character is really played by a person with challenges and he's in on jokes. Some may be offended, I howled in laughter! |
Law and Order: SVU on NBC
SVU returned this week with another one of their classic episodes that tackles many of the current events happening in the country. Sometimes they are a bit heavy-handed with the story line knockoffs, but then many other times they are spot on. I thought the opening scene where the boy sitting in the sandbox pulls out a gun on Benson was one of the moments that make this show great. |
Designated Survivor on ABC
OK, I'm hooked. After one episode I have a new favorite show of the season. I mean, I looked at the clock and was like no, its almost over already?!?! The hour flew by, which is a great sign for any show. Kiefer Sutherland will always be seen as Jack Bauer to me, so I will refer to him as Jack when I discuss this show, so get used to it. What a premiere!! You must check it out and we will discuss!! |
Thursday
Grey's Anatomy on ABC
The return of Grey's was a continuation of last years finale, where we saw the aftermath of Alex beating teh hell out of Deluca. That was crazy and it really set up a great new story line where Alex may be losing his job due to his actions. And clearly Meredith and Maggie are going to have a blow up. |
Superstore on NBC
No question that season one of Superstore was the surprising new comedy of the year, and the season two premiere continued the reputation the show built. The strike was so well written and performed and really let the characters shine. I love one liners and there were plenty in this one. |
The Good Place on NBC
I am a big fan of The Good Place, as its Kristen Bell at her best. She's hilarious and talks a lot of shit. Win win. I love how she can't cuss, so all her words are replaced with close to cuss words. NBC has another winner on their hands with this one. I loved the ending when the mute spoke!!! |
Pitch on FOX
The premiere of Pitch felt like one of those monumental shows that are usually reserved for a movie. I mean, I was entertained but I do question how much longevity the series will have. She will have her ups and downs and face discrimination, but I do question how the show will be able to balance this. Truth is, many question if this could ever really be possible, and the show could be seen as affirmation of that fact. I liked the twist at the end where we learned her father had passed away. |
How to Get Away with Murder on ABC
This show has the best twist and turn of any shows on TV, and there is no doubt about that. The shows signature continues to be its use of flash backs and forwards, and this season looks like it will step that up even more. The final scene where we see a flash to someone close to Annalise dying and the then the reveal that each week will will find out which person is not dead is a very good hook. But sadly I think its got to be a major character for it to work and my guess is it will be Bonnie. |
60 Days In on A&E
There is no docu- reality series on TV that I enjoy more than 60 Days in. This episode was the breaking point for Brian, who has been getting harassed ever since he entered D-pod. Dafron tortured this guy to the point that he feared for his life and quit the program. Fact is, he stuck out like a sore thumb and he was never going to last in jail. I feel a little bad for Zac's wife Ashleigh too. He has shown her no compassion at all and is really coming off like a asshole. |
Friday
Shark Tank on ABC
My favorite reality show returned and it was so great to see the new panel of six sharks all negotiating at the same time. I always wondered why they didn't do this before, since all six are such an important part of the shows fabric. The best deal this week was the beer machine that Mark and Lorie invested in. |
Hell's Kitchen on FOX
The new season of Hell's kitchen brigs a new crop of potential Cooks for Gordon to torture. I always love the early episodes as we get to know the cast and their personalities. I also love the challenge where they have to make a signature dish. Gordon tares anyone apart. Lol. But that's his charm. |
Sunday
Survivor's Remorse on Starz
Man, this show has really gotten so good. Last week we learned that Cam's mother was gang-raped and impregnated with Mary Charles when she was younger, which is why she never told Mary Charles who her father was. That blew our minds. And the aftermath and what it has done to Cam has been real and believable. And of course the affect on Mary Charles is unimaginable. Great job by the producers, touching on an angle that is rarely touched on TV. Excellent finale. |
Power on Starz
The season Finale of season 3 of Power was straight fire!! Man, was it great. Tommy and Ghost came together to kill Milan, and in the process, Tommy may have taken over the drug business behind Ghost back. Greg Knox is dead and Jamie was locked up for the murder he didn't commit. And that fool Tyrique bout to get raped by Kanan. Smh. So much happened in this episode that we saw coming but I didn't think they would execute. Excellent and I can't wait till next season! |
Secrets and Lies on ABC
This season follows a whole new cast and story line, but there is one constant, Detective Cornell is like a dog gnawing on a bone. This chick does not have any mercy on anyone. This seaosn she is investigating the murder of a woman who fell from the roof of a building and the main suspect is her husband. On the surface, it looks like he would never do it. But after one episode, I'm pretty sure someone very close to him did. I love Secrets and Lies because the twist were excellent in season 1 and I have no doubt this season will be great as well. |
Masters of Sex on Showtime
This season has been very good seeing Virginia and Bill try to conduct business separately while being so close together. Bill has found himself a new assistant, who really is there to try and make Virginia jealous. Its not really working. Virginia is lying saying that she's married, when she really isn't. Also their new assistants have been hiding that they are actually married. All of this has been crazy and will lead to some fireworks when all the realities come to light. So far this has been great. I love Bill's interactions with Neicy Nash too. |
