Best Thing I Watched Last Week: Halt and Catch Fire
One of my favorite types of shows to watch are period dramas, where the show takes you back into another time and focuses on what is happening during a different period. AMC's Halt and Catch Fire does exactly that and with greatness.
Halt and Catch Fire takes you back to the 1980's when innovation in the world of personal computers is taking off. Not long after IBM corners the market with its flagship PC, a flaw is discovered in its operation, opening the door for competition. Joe MacMillan, a former IBM executive who now works for Cardiff Electric, plans to take IBM's own technology and create Cardiff's own PC. He, along with engineer Gordon Clark and a genius coder named Cameron Howe, dream of creating a revolutionary computer.
Season 1 was great but so far season 2 has been excellent. The story this year evolves as a year has passed since Joe set fire to a truck full of Cardiff Giant PCs.
Cameron and Donna have started their own gaming company, where they not only make computer games, but they have created an online community. I love how the show shines a light on these two smart women working together to build a company back in the 80's. Alot of different dynamics at play here.
Gordon is basically a stay at home father. He received a nice payout check from Cardiff and is now in a different place in his life. We talk about this later.
And Joe, well, he undergoes a drastic life style change. He finds a woman he can be completely honest with and has turned over a new leaf. He gets nothing from Cardiff after the buyout and he goes to work for his girlfriends father's company, working a mere 9 to 5 as a document filer.
Much has changed. But as the season progresses, we see that many of the same character traits are still there with our four main cast members.
Last week was a hell of an episode. Gordon had been diagnosed with some type of brain disease that is killing him and he has yet to tell Donna, as he doesn't want her to give up her dream of running her company to come home and care for him. He ends up confiding in his brother's ex girlfriend, while on a trip to California, and even has sex with her!!! It was a shocker.
Also, we found our a few weeks ago that Donna is pregnant and she has not told Gordon. She is focused on her career and really has not shown her current children any attention, and it appears she has no desire for more. At the conclusion of last week's episode, we see her go to Planned Parenthood, and we are left to assume she is there to get an abortion.
So much more happened last week, and during this season, that has made this show a huge winner in my book. If you have not been watching, do yourself a favor and give Halt and Catch Fire a chance. Definitely the best thing I watched last week.
