Ravens Report: Secondary is the Key
Today the Baltimore Ravens signed corner back Jimmy Smith to a contract extension, investing additional years and dollars into the best player in their secondary.
Smith missed 10 games last year due to injury, and his presence was missed. The problem with the Ravens secondary continues to be that they can not stay healthy, and when they return from injury, they rarely are back at the level the once were. Just look at the impact injuries have had on Lardarious Webb. Smh.
On the surface, it looks to be a good decision to lock up Smith, as he is the best corner we have. But in my opinion, the Ravens have made little effort to make big improvements to the biggest area of concern the team faced when the off season began.
The Ravens restructured Webb's contract, extended Smith, and signed safety Kendrick Lewis, formerly of the Houston Texans.
Now, I like the Lewis pick up, and hopefully he breathes life to the safety position. But Will Hill next to him, doesn't impress me.
And Webb is not a lock down corner any longer. Asa Jackson can't stay healthy, therefore we can't go into the season depending on him. Especially with the combination of his off the field troubles.
If I were in charge I would find replacements for Terrence Brooks, Matt Elam, and Rashaan Melvin. Though Melvin may get better by playing special teams. The other two suck. I'm done with Elam. Can't win with him. A bust.
This is not the secondary of a Super Bowl caliber team. For all the talent we have at linebacker and in the pass rush area, we suck on the back end, and Ozzie must continue to work to improve it.
The draft is quickly approaching and the secondary is the number 1 focus I would have. I know a lot of people want the Ravens to draft a receiver, but I want to stop the other team from scoring. That should be the goal. That's how the Ravens legacy was built and that is how it will continue.
