Mad Men, The Final Season
When people ask me why AMC's Mad Men has received so much critical acclaim over the course of its first 6 seasons on the air, I struggle to find the exact words to explain it.
All I know is Mad Men is a great television show that transforms me to another point in time whenever I watch it. It ranks in my top 15 for greatest television shows of all time and I am greatly anticipating the final season to begin, this Sunday night.
Mad Men is a time period Drama, based in the 1960's in New York. The plot focuses on Don Draper, a man struggles to stay on top of the heap in the high-pressure world of Madison Avenue advertising firms. Aside from his struggles at work, Don also has a family to lead, and his extracurricular activities with the ladies often puts Don in a precarious position with his wife.
Watching Mad Men is like watching a cultural revolution occur in slow motion and over time, particularly when you were born too late to know and experience such change for yourself, is fascinating.
As a black man, of course I usually think of this particular time period of the 1960's through the eyes of the black civil right's experience, but when I watch Mad Men it shows a different point of view.
And no, it's not just about the rise of white American men in business, it's covers the United States busting through cultural and gender constraints. The creators of Mad Men paint the most interesting cultural backdrop with real live events that happened. You can feel the need for a new world through the pain and intense constraints that each character must live with. In particular the show shines a light on the women's movement.
I think of Mad Men as a living storytelling drama. In many ways its a biopic. The characters are not good or bad like most other shows. The are grey as opposed to black and white as you find on most network shows. Unlike other shows with grey characters they don't do insane illogical stuff out of character for the dramatic effect.
I purposely will not talk about the plot, because I want you to take your time to watch the series from season 1 on. It is definitely one of those shows that you want to watch from the beginning and follow along the progression.
Trust me, this will not be the last time I write extensively about this great show.
