Saturday Night Combat Sports Review
Last night in the main event of Premier Boxing Championship's premier show on ESPN, Keith Thurman defeated Luis Collazo by TKO. But the story of the show for me was Thurman's inability to put on a superstar performance and elevate himself to the next level.
Without a doubt I am a fan of Thurman, and I root for him to be the successor to Floyd Mayweather. But once again, Thurman failed to knock out an opponent on the national TV platform nor did he impressively dominate Collazo.
Collazo actually stunned Thurman with a body shot in teh 5th round and was in deep trouble. I give him credit for fighting back and regaining control of the fight with some impressive power punches and crowd pleasing flurries, but he didn't do enough to elevate himself to the next level.
The bout ended after an accidental headbutt caused Collazo to essentially quit in the corner after round seven, due to a cut outside his right eye, which he told his corner made him unable to see.
Thurman was in control of the fight and would have won had it continued, but he needed a showcase performance, and this was not it.
In the under card, veteran Willie Nelson pulled off the upset when he knocked out Tony Harrison in the 9th round. Harrison was a much talked about rising prospect whom many saw big things for. But he came crashing down, hard.
Check out some highlights.
