DVR Top Five of the Week - 8/2/21
Welcome back to my countdown of the five best shows I watched last week. Its been awhile since we did the countdown, mainly because there are not many great shows airing right now for multiple reasons.
So to kick off the return of the countdown, I will list the five best shows I watched last week, but also give a little background on my thoughts on the series/season overall. The fall season is just around the corner, with many of our favorite shows returning, so this is a perfect time to get back in the swing of things.
- The pandemic delayed a lot of shows from filming.
- Summer season is always a bit slower, although its recently been just as busy as the Fall.
- So many great shows have ended their runs and not been replaced by new hits.

TOP FIVE SHOWS
OF THE LAST WEEK
NUMBER FIVE
Raising Kanan - Starz
The second Power spin off hit Starz last month and it focuses on Kanan growing up in Jamaica Queens. We basically get to see that Kanan was born into a family of drug dealers and gang bangers, and he was destined to be apart of the game no matter what. His mother Raquel is dope dealer and leads a crew that has some serious sway in the city, and his father is in jail for the game. It's a good show that tells a familiar tale. It's not groundbreaking or anything, but seeing how Kanan was shaped into the stone cold villain in Power will be interesting to track.
So far we saw Kanan try to protect his mother's corners by running some guys he thinks are invading her territory off with his little crew. But things go bad, and Kanan shoots and kills one of the dudes, who just so happens to be dating the girl he's feeling at school. You can't make this up. Word is out that Kanan did it, so a bounty is placed on his head, and he's nearly killed outside his front door. So he's officially in the game. Raquel has to forfeit her territory and bend the knee to keep peace and keep her son alive. Truth is she wants her son to go to school and stay away from the game but Kanan wants in and he won't be denied. But he's got a lot to learn. She teaches him how to shoot a gun and puts him on the stash house as his first post. Its a test, as to be a leader, you must first be a good follower. Kanan then gets a package to put on the street from his uncle. Moving slow ain't his style. From the jump, this guy wanted to be Bumpy Johnson. Lol.

NUMBER FOUR
Grown-ish - Freeform
Grown-ish returned a few weeks ago, picking up a timeline where quarantine is over and life is getting back to normal. It was good to see a show not so COVID-19 focused. It was necessary to acknowledge real life at the start, but we don't need to make every show about the real life hell we experience daily.
I'm glad the writers found yet another way to tease us with the Zoey and Aaron relationship, while not breaking them up again. I got to be honest, Zoey is the most annoying person on the show and she's the main character. Its like she's always whining about something. This week she just had to tell Aaron's ex that they slept together while Aaron was with her and that they are together now. The girl knew and Zoey had to embarrass shorty by basically rubbing it in here face, by clearing her guilt. Annoying as hell, and I'm glad she got cussed out in return.
Also, it must be noted just how hilarious of a character Vivek is. This guy always makes me laugh with his antics. And I have to bring up how damn sexy Chloe is on this show. Glad she decided track isn't for her anymore, cause she too thick!

NUMBER THREE
David Makes Man - OWN
This season of David Makes Man has been extremely interesting, as rather than picking up where they left off last season, the show writers used the long extended break between seasons to take the story in a completely unexpected direction. The show basically is now fast forwarded to David as a fully grown professional business man, but also flashbacks to stages of his youth. We see that David works in corporate America and really has become somewhat of a narcissistic shark, living two lives essentially, and so damaged that he's unable to connect with others. These are traits we always saw David exhibit in prior seasons, where he whore one mask in front of white people to fit in in school or social settings where he was out of his element, but also had to where a mask around the Ville, where he also didn't fit in in the hood and was socially awkward.
David is one of the most dynamic characters on TV because he's so multi dimensional, and anything but cookie cutter. Makes watching the show very interesting because you see elements of this everyday where we have to play a part to make others comfortable with us in a work setting, while also staying true to our roots around friends and family. When in fact, we all have different sides to us. With David though, he's really mentally conflicted. We see so many scenes where he wants to react one way, and we see it play out that way on screen, but in reality he reacts the "polite" way, because he often tells people what he feels they want to hear. The only person who has ever been able to see through David's persona, and in turn is the only person he actually respects or is afraid of disappointing is Dr. Woods-Trap, played by Phylicia Rashad. David always has wanted Dr. Woods-Trap's approval because nobody else, not even his mother has ever really paid enough attention to see through his bullshit and hold him accountable. Which in reality is what I think David really wants. To be seen.

NUMBER TWO
The Good Fight - Paramount Plus
This season of the Good Fight has continued to exhibit why the writers are some of the most creative people on TV, as every season the format is so innovative. This season they did an excellent job filling in gaps of what we missed from the extended time off between seasons, giving characters like Lucca a great exit, while leaving the door open for a return after travel restrictions are over, as well as filling any plot holes, like Julius' jail sentence being pardoned by Trump. I love this show because it really is one of the only dramas that actually is based in the real world and deals directly with current events. I really can't think of another show that does this as honestly. Of course many shows have told the story of COVID-19 and shown its impact on their characters, but The Good Fight touches on Covid and so much more.
The universe of the show mirrors our real reality and I love that they acknowledge real life events like the election, death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and the events of January 6th. Not to mention having Kurt as a conservative implicated as knowing people involved is such an excellent twist that no other show on TV even would really come close to touching. Pretty much every show on TV is presented from a liberal perspective, but the Good Fight presents both sides on many occasions. This season has been great!

THIS WEEK'S NUMBER ONE
The Chi - Showtime
The season 4 finale aired last night and overall I have to say The Chi deserves the top spot for our return countdown. This season has focused on so many different angles and storylines that are rarely touched on. We saw Keisha battle with the decision to give up for adoption or keep the baby that was conceived when she was held hostage and raped last season. That shit was super deep and Keisha struggled with it. She gave the baby up but ultimately decided that she wanted to mother the child. Very deep, and something I don't recall being covered on another show I have watched closely. We saw Jada battle cancer, and Emmitt struggle with the possibility that he may lose his mother. That really hit home, as I couldn't imagine the helplessness of not knowing if my mother was going to live or die. I don't even want to think about it.
Speaking of Emmitt, his big storyline of the season took a twist last night that will differently play out next season. We saw Emmitt cheat on Tiff with Dom last season, and this fool couldn't live with the lie anymore and came clean to Tiff this season. She decided that they would have an open marriage and have sex with other people. In theory, yea some might be cool with being able to do their own thing, but this idiot Emmitt is an idiot for a reason. First of all, why the hell would anyone want to cheat on Tiff sexy ass? He's an idiot. She could have so many dudes its crazy and she with his dumb broke ass. So Tiff started having sex with one of her clients and Emmitt got jealous. Real jealous. So jealous that by the end of the season, he don't want to be with nobody but his wife and doesn't want to be with her if they aren't going to be exclusive. So Tiff agrees to cut off her side piece. And then in the closing sequence of the finale, we see her going to hook up with another one of her clients. Emmitt has truly fumbled the bag. Idiot. Great season with so many other storylines.
