DVR Top Five of the Week - 9/3/21
Welcome back to my countdown of the five best shows I watched last week. This week we all over the gambit with drama with some of the best drama and reality shows I watched filling up the top five spots. Let's get to it!
TOP FIVE SHOWS
OF THE LAST WEEK
NUMBER FIVE
Below Deck Mediterranean - Bravo
This season of Below Deck Med has seen Captain Sandy with damn near a whole new crew, and it has been full of drama. Alot of the drama has been due to the crazy, delusional Chef, who should have been fired when he walked off the job, TWICE, and burned his damn fingers to a crisp. But more so the focus has been on the black stewardess Lexi, who is a combination of sexy and a whole lot of crazy, but really, she's not that bad when she's sober. The show tries to paint her as the classic sassy black girl who will "pop off", but ever since her drunken night when she went off on the crew, including Malia, she has basically kept her head down and done her job. Sure, she's made a few mistakes like not setting the table for breakfast one morning, but really, nothing major. I think it can't be ignored that shortly before the season she lost her father to COVID-19 and is still grieving.
I like this season because it gives us a look at how minorities are treated working in the Yachting industry, and the difference between how someone like Lexi see's things and how Zee does. Zee was raised by a white family and seems to be the type that just wants to blend in and be accepted, while Lexi is 100% black and proud and stands her ground. I like the representation of both POVs, and it has been interesting examining how each are treated due to their co-workers expectations of their behaviors.

NUMBER FOUR
Grown-ish - Freeform
Zoey stay doing too much. Why would she ever think that signing on for an internship with Luka would ever be cool with Aaron? She does this for attention, I'm convinced. She loves this triangle thing, and she loves feeling like both of these guys would choose her and I hate how she plays these games. Aaron always seems to put in more, while lazy Luka does minimal and still keeps an attachment to Zoey. I hate it. But the BEST part of the episode was Vivek and Ana hooking up!!! This was great!
NUMBER THREE
Raising Kanan - Starz
The last few episodes of Raising Kanan has heated up and the story has gotten more interesting. I don't think the writing has been exactly top notch but I see where things are headed now and hopefully the building blocks that have been laid will make for an entertaining payoff. My favorite part of last week's episode was when Jukebox and Famous performed and Kanan realized that Famous’s lyrics were actual events he stole from Kanan’s life and placed them in the song. That shit happens all too often, where rappers will act like they are talking about their life experiences, and are straight up plagiarizing.
Also we saw Kanan with his first "boss" move, by suggesting to Marvin that instead of worrying about corners, they start selling drugs at a gas station off the highway. And at the end of the episode, we see Marvin put it into motion. This could end up being great or something that lands them all in jail.

NUMBER TWO
Heels - Starz
I like Heels. Sure, there are a few inaccuracies and too much loosey goosey with how the inner workings of the business actually works, but overall, its a good show based on the pro wrestling business. I enjoyed seeing the heel turn of Ace last week, and his complete ignorance of how the business works. Ace never wanted to turn heel, because he felt if he turned heel, he would have to be a heel in real life. When in reality, he was a heel in real life and playing heel was natural to him. But in his mind, he's the good guy. The dichotomy is excellent.
THIS WEEK'S NUMBER ONE
David Makes Man - OWN
I absolutely love the writing of this show, and this season has truly been a master class. Honestly if you are not watching David Makes Man, you are missing out on one of the best shows on TV, period. I love the interactions between Young David and modern David, as they truly are a deep look into the the psyche of a young black man who has experienced multiple levels of trauma.
This was the season finale and we saw David have a breakthrough, where he basically came alive and gained real happiness and inner peace. I loved seeing him interact with his girlfriend Nicole. I was so happy for him, cause shorty is so sexy and I just want them together. Plus I loved that David and his mother finally came to peace. David and his mother's relationship has been really a key to the series if you go all the way back to season 1. I loved this season so much.
