DVR Top Five of the Week - 9/9/21
Welcome back to my countdown of the five best shows I watched last week. This week we all over the gambit with some of the best drama and reality shows I watched filling up the top five spots. Let's get to it!
TOP FIVE SHOWS
OF THE LAST WEEK
NUMBER FIVE
Raising Kanan - Starz
The big shocker at the end of this week's episode was seeing Nicole take a hit from the pipe and collapse, appearing to overdose and die. This was crazy! Last week we saw her get her first taste of drugs in the club when she went to Jukebox's show, and I figured they would go the route of her getting hooked on drugs. But I had not clue they would possible kill her off this quickly, so I'm hoping that she doesn't die and we see this story develop further. The story of white girls from the suburbs coming to the city and getting mixed in with fast crowds they aren't accustomed to is an age old story. The fact is white people use drugs far more than black people because addiction has no respect of person and there are more white people in America. But the news would have you think that black people are the only junkies out here.
As far as the overarching story of the show, I really struggle with the story. I feel like the show tries to juggle so many storylines, and I struggle with what the main through line is supposed to be. Are we focusing on Kanan's development, Raquel's love life, Lou Lou's music career, or Marvin's drug expansion. We get a little of each but not a lot sticks with me. But I'll still watch.

NUMBER FOUR
90 Day Fiancé The Other Way - TLC
Two episodes into The Other Way and it has given some five star moments. First of all, we have to talk about Ari and Bini. I was appalled and disgusted that Ari invited her ex husband all the way to Africa and basically threw him in the face of Bini. If I were Bini, I would have not been this nice towards homeboy, cause the story behind their breakup is super messy and they fact that they are "best friends" would be unacceptable. Ari is an idiot and a manipulator. I said that since their first season, and she continues to show me that she wants to be a TV star. For her not to wear her ring and get dolled up for her ex-husbands arrival, embarrassing her husband like that, was a terrible look.
Another couple that I must highlight is Steven and Alina, a new couple this season. These two are moving to Turkey together because of the current boarder situation in Russia due to Covid. Steven is a "devout" Moorman and is looking to convert Alina to his religion prior to marriage. The problem is, he's got a secret and that he's been lying to her about being a virgin. Alina is a virgin and has been under the impression that Steven's religion is important to him and she must conform, but when she finds out he's been sleeping around prior to their relationship, she's going to be pissed! To make matters worst, Alina explained to her friends that Steven displayed characteristics of someone who may have been cheating on her. After finding out he's not a virgin, I think its going to click in her head that Steven has been cheating on her the entire time. But its been fun!

NUMBER THREE
Queen Sugar - OWN
The season premiere aired this week and it was largely a catchup on everything that has happened during the time between seasons. We learned that Covid continues to rock St. Joe, and vaccination distribution was a focus of this week's episode. We saw Mr. Prosper get into a altercation with the police, which ended in him taking a huge fall and his head bouncing off the pavement. I hope they aren't killing off Prosper, but instead will use the interaction with the police as a rallying cry for the "Defund the Police" narrative they touched on this week. I also liked how Aunt Violet was against the "Defund the Police" movement, which will cause some deep discussion and dissension in the family.
We caught up with Charlie, who is still dating her ex husband Davis, which I have my doubts about, but if it works out, great. Ralph Angel is in financial trouble, and it looks terrible. He's behind on every bill, and is in trouble of losing the farm. Also, the crop has not been successful. Plus Darla is pregnant, which is an added expense. He's banking on money to come in from a settlement, and I got a feeling that its money that isn't coming.

NUMBER TWO
Billions - Showtime
One of my favorite shows returned on Sunday night and it hooked me right off the bat! Last season saw Axe getting outplayed and outmaneuvered a lot more than usual, and to be honest, I didn't like it. I don't like when Axe doesn't get the satisfaction of a win, and the Yonker's deal last season left such a bad taste that Axe needed a big win to kick off the season. And he got it in spades! Not only did he pull one over on Chuck, something we didn't see enough of last season, but he finally got the better of his new arch enemy from last season, Michael Prince. That expose' on how Prince basically cheated his former business partner out of the company they built together was glorious! Big ups to Dollar Bill for coming through with the dirt. This is setting the stage for the war to really heat up between Axe and Prince even more, and I can't wait! And Chuck is coming for blood too!
THIS WEEK'S NUMBER ONE
Heels - Starz
This was the best episode of the season on multiple levels and the best show I watched all week. I absolutely loved the scene where they shot the promo between Ace and Bobby, fighting all over town. That was a fun getting a great glimpse into how these smaller companies are creating buzz around their promotions using internet hype videos. Reminds me of how the Young Bucks used their YouTube show "Being the Elite" to build their storylines that eventually led to AEW. This was fun. Also, I liked the relationship development between Bobby and Crystal. I think she is going to be a brilliant mind in the business and should be a major emphasis on the heel development of Ace, as his real jealousy will bleed out into his in ring character.
Also, please tell me its obvious to everyone that Wild Bill is a take on Michael Hayes! I love it. Every time I see him, all I see is the Freebird. The show keeps getting better.
